Green Bottle Fly

Introduction

The Green bottle fly is actually a blowfly, member of the family Calliphoridae. Common throughout the UK.
Can be found eating on fruit, dead animals, rubbish areas. The larvae can help determine a time of death in police forensic investigations.

Metallic green/blue colours, also black markings
8-15mm long

Biology

Female can lay 2000-3,000 eggs in a lifetime, Will lay 200-300 at a time
Eggs will hatch with 4 days depending on temperature

Food

Will feed on any wet rubbish from bins, as well as decaying meat

Habitat

Green bottle fly can be found around decaying meat, bins, animal faeces. Will gain entry to your home through open windows and doors.
