Silverfish
(Lepisma saccharina)

Introduction

Found in warm or damp condition, Sunder the bath, in boiler cupboards, storerooms etc. They are not known for causing damage and are easily removed by treatment and or removing damp conditions on which they thrive on.

Description

A wingless insect, silverfish have grey/silver scales, and three tail-like bristles at the rear of the abdomen. Adults are between 8-12mm long and their antennae are two-thirds the length of their body. Silverfish are able to moult as adults.

Food

Silverfish will eat a wide variety of foods, preferring starchy food or mouldy decaying food. They also eat other dead insects as well as shampoo and glue.

Habitat

Silverfish can usually be found in areas of high humidity/ damp places like bathrooms, kitchens and store cupboards, silverfish can usually be found under your floorboards, behind shirting boards.

Reasons for control

Nuisance: Mostly seen at night, the Silverfish does not cause any major damage to self or property. Because they are found in areas of high humidity or damp.
